Thursday 30th January - walk ***** – Rendlesham Forest and Staverton Thicks – sunny.

I meet a fellow photographer a few times at Felixstowe Ferry and he recommended the ancient wood called Staverton Thicks which is part of Rendlesham Forest and we were keen to have a look. So with wall to wall sunshine forecast for today it looked perfect to ride over to check it out. We had time to do our exercises before I packed a picnic and set off to Woodbridge in search of the Thicks which is not signed anywhere:(, There is a lay-by near the entrance to the woods but we decided to move along the road to Butley Corner. We then took the footpath with the forest on the left and a huge field of pigs happy munching in muddy troughs just great to see but sadly no piglets about today! We then turned right and followed the path past Bentwaters airbase spotting a muntjac deer and Wantisden camp site. It was so peaceful and we were surprised to come across a large number of small lakes. There was a shortage of signs but Mag had a map on our phone so we turned right again past Staverton Park which led to the amazing ancient woods and the oak trees are wonderful. Then into a darker section of forest and Mag took some cool pics on her phone before we reach the Butley Road, we then walked back through the pine woods of Rendlesham forest and were pleased to get back to the van after walking nearly 4 miles and my heel was hurting:( We then enjoyed our picnic in the car park and before leaving we cleared up a huge amount of cans which were just thrown into the undergrowth what is wrong with people, the world has gone to shite:( The rubbish did not spoil an otherwise perfect day here in sunny Suffolk!
